The Life of Do Something Difficult

by Josh on May 10, 2011

Towards the end of April 2010 I was overcome with the urge to make Youtube videos. I made one about happiness and one about taking action.

On May 3, 2010 I made a motivational youtube video called “Do Something Difficult” where I attempt to break a plywood board over my head to convince people that if they believe in themselves they can accomplish just about anything. I posted it to my Facebook and it was well met by my friends, many of whom questioned my sanity and were concerned for my head.

Once the excitement had died down after a few days I forgot about the video until one of my friends posted on my wall telling me I was on the front page of Break.com. Under the title of “Motivational Speaker Board Break Fail” it got 200,000 views almost instantly. A few days later I was informed by another Facebook friend that I was on the front page of Ebaumsworld. Keeping true to his character, Eric Bauman posted a low quality version of the video that was missing the final minute and the final scene where I break the board. By the same process of friends posting to my Facebook I learned that I was on Collegehumor, Liveleak, and some other sites.

It was pretty exciting during the early days as I had never expected that the video would be seen beyond a few friends on Facebook. Being on a major video site was exciting the first few times, but as I was showcased on more and more sights it became less exciting. But just when I thought it couldn’t get any better I learned I was parodied by Nalts, one of the top 20 most viewed comedians on Youtube. The first time I saw Nalts’ parody of my video I literally fell to the floor from laughter because it was so funny to see someone try to fail at something I failed at so naturally. About a month later another less funny parody came out and was pretty much booed by everyone.

About a month after I released the video I started getting requests to license it for TV shows. It was subsequently aired on G4′s Web Soup, MTV Canada, and World’s Dumbest Home Videos. When TruTV contacted me they didn’t tell me which show it was going to be on, and I might’ve thought twice about having my video called the dumbest home video. Even though he didn’t ask for permission, I found George Lopez’s commentary on my video to be pretty funny. The appearance on Zeitgeist was also unlicensed and his commentary was almost word for word what I said in the video.

I forgot about the video again until I was contacted by a researcher for Tosh.0 in October a few weeks before I was going to leave for Mexico. They were nice enough to fly me back from Mexico to film a Web Redemption on December 17th. Daniel Tosh is an interesting and funny guy and I’m glad he had me on his show. After three months of waiting, Josh.0 finally got to see himself on Tosh.0 in a Karate Kid style Web Redemption.

When I was in my twenties I read all of Ayn Rand books. I don’t remember reading much about children or vuneralbe populations.

When I was in my sixties I read a lot of Rabbi Abraham Jouhsa Heschel’s stuff.

The quote that stuck with me was: “When I was young I I admired clever people; now that I am old I admire kind people.
